Underachievement: Understanding Motivational
Paralysis
"Have you done your homework?" Parents and teachers resent being
forced to act the role of enforcer almost as much as children hate requiring
it, especially when the child seems unable to pursue even enjoyable activities.
This malaise mystifies adults who worked to create opportunities for a child
who seems perversely determined to be miserable. Traditional advice such as
"be firm with them" or "it's just a phase" are not helpful.
Analysis will compare a healthy motivational system and common forms of
motivational paralysis. Discussion will focus on supporting development of
long-term healthy motivation and disarming self-sabotaging habits
Anna Caveney is an education consultant. She has designed and
implemented individualized curricula for homeschooling teenagers,
developed a theory of the emotional foundations of underachievement and led
workshops addressing the challenges and joys of being highly gifted. She has
created and taught classes in calculus, thinking skills and peer counseling.

What is
What do we know about intelligence? What is it, how is
it measured, how do people differ in it, and how much does it change? In order
to understand what it means to be told, "your
child has a 160 IQ", it helps to know something about the typical
capabilities and behaviors of people with IQs of 130, 100 and 70. The aim of
this presentation is to provide background details about what normal means, to
help the gifted understand the typical needs that schools and society are meant
to meet.
Ryan Caveney M.S., is a physicist and mathematician. He has studied at MIT,
Princeton and Johns Hopkins, and once taught 9th grade science in

When Personalities Differ
Tired of family conflicts? Having trouble
communicating with a spouse or a co-worker? Frustrated with teachers or
relatives who just don't understand your child? Then come to this session where
we will discuss personality type differences: how to recognize when your
dealing with a type difference and how to better interact with other types.
Prerequisite: Knowledge (or best-guess) of your family's MBTI types.
Personality Type: The Advanced Course
Already know the basics of the MBTI? Interested in learning more? Then come to
this session where we will discuss type development (what develops at which
age) and type dynamics. Learn about why some people with similar types can
differ so greatly. Learn about the shadow function and the demon...underdeveloped
parts of your personality that can trip you up when you least expect it.
Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of MBTI. Knowledge of your own MBTI type.
Karen Frost is a personal coach and organizational development
consultant, and the mom of a PG teenager. She has spent over 20 years
consulting with large corporations such as American Express, Amoco, CNA, Coach Leathergoods, GTE, Manpower, Miller Brewing, and many
others. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from

Theory of Positive Disintegration: Beyond
Overexcitabilities.
Far too many conference presentations spend far too much time and attention to
Dabrowski’s overexcitabilities (OEs), and not nearly
enough time and attention to the rest of the iceberg we call TPD!
In this session, we will examine the Dynamisms that drive personality growth; discuss
what our emotions and relationships look like through the different levels of
development, and explore the connections between this rich theory and the lives
of our children and ourselves. (For those unfamiliar with the Theory, there
will be a brief introduction at the beginning.)
Beyond Visual-Spatial
In common discussion, on the email lists, at conferences, and in much of the
literature, there is discussion of the Audio-Sequential/Visual-Spatial
dichotomy. Yet, powerful as that way of looking at the world is, there are
parts of both our experiences and the literature of learning that are not taken
into account. How does that framework interact with other learning styles
theories? How is it touched by personality type theory?
We will also be looking at the implications and applications of these learning
style theories to study, to classes, and to life issues.

public and private schools, and whatever else comes down the pike. He works
predominantly with gifted children, with a focus on underachievers and hg/pg
issues. He is also slowly researching non-linear thinking styles.

Chess Variations.
Lots of us have made up our own rules for this game or that. Chess is so old
that people have been making up different rules for it for centuries! We’re
going to learn and play a few of those weird games.
Logic Games
Is it possible to know who will or should win a game before it even starts? How complicated does a game have to be before it
becomes either fun or too hard? We’re going to try playing Sprouts, Mastermind,
Jotto, Ghost, and several other games that involve
reasoning. Bring your brains!

TBD
Beginning Chess (6-9 years)
This workshop is designed for the child with very little experience playing the
game. We will introduce the pieces and how they move along with some basic
strategies.
Intermediate Chess (9-12 years)
Okay - I know how to move the pieces, but how do I make a plan? How do I
combine my pieces? How do I checkmate my opponent?! Learn how to develop a
strategy for beating your opponent.
TBD has been presenting at
Beyond IQ conferences since they started in 2001! With a reputation unmatched
by any presenter in the history of our Children's Program, TBD brings a
mischievous spontaneity to the day.
